Hello, my name is Elisabeth Waldstein

I am a creative artist who has struggled with chronic health conditions for most of my life.

I am half Austrian and half American. I grew up in Austria and moved to the States when I was 15, and then to Italy 8 years later! I am now based in Florence, and I love it!

Although I have always adored art through my classical upbringing, visiting the Art History Museum in Vienna countless times, as well as traveling to see other incredible art museums all over Europe and USA, I only really started to paint whilst at university.

Midway through my studies in classical music, I found out that I had a tumor inside my heart, and a year on bed rest and a decline in strength proved I would never be physically well enough to pursue a career as a singer. So! There I was, lying in bed with nothing to do, so I started exploring various different creative mediums such as jewelry design, writing for Verily Magazine, and painting, as a way to escape the pain. What began as studies of my favorite impressionist artists bloomed into an artistic talent completely its own, and I gained enough confidence to start composing my own paintings.

I am particularly drawn towards the brilliant color and power of the Impressionist school whose strength of imagery inspires me, and I particularly enjoy impasto painting with the palette knife technique with both oils and acrylics. I have had the luck to have my work internationally exhibited in England, Austria, the United States and Italy.

In 2018, I spent a year at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, mastering technique and developing my style further. I then lived in Florence for two further years, spending time painting en plein air in the beautiful city.

The experience of Covid-19 provided a fruitful turn to watercolor—a medium perfect for painting on-the-go en plein air. Due to my day job as a medical coder and revenue cycle specialist, I actually traveled to many different hospitals and clinics during the pandemic. Because of the travel, I needed a new medium to accommodate not spending time in the studio. Watercolors turned out to be the answer. Now, I enjoy painting in watercolor as much as with my oils, and am able to take my studio with me, wherever I go.

I am deeply inspired by all of my travels (to 31+ countries!), and paint distinct vivid memories that have stayed with me through the years.

Now, I can say, my true love is watercoloring en plein air. I love sitting with a spritz and my watercolor kit, painting the city as I experience it.
